Hee! Hee! I actually emailed the guy this morning about his service and whether it would be necessary to recalibrate the focusing to compansate for IR. He said that he did not have to adjust the camera and to prove it he sent me a full resolution file of the building photo in the first row of samples. If you're interested, I could email you the 3MB file.
If you look at the first row's samples, there's actually a man seated in the bottem right corner. In the full resolution IR shot, the man's face can be seen quite clearly.
I asked if he would take orders from SG and he said yes but we would have to handle the extra shipping and insurance cost. The camera needs to be shipped to Washington in USA (I think it's Washington, his state and zip is WA 98087).
Cheers,
Matt

Thanks for sharing, Matt. After modified, the shutter speed is shorter and even can do handheld shoot... Looks interesting.... Possible to send the sample file to my yahoo-email (photography_expression@yahoo.com)?
Got to ship over... worry D.H.L. (Delivery-Halfway-Lost)
Cheers!

We could get some custom cut R72s and see if we could pay Nikon SG a small fee to put it in for us with the understanding that our warranty would become void. The important thing is that they have a clean room.
Cheers

AAARRRGGGHHH! This is driving me nuts!!
Went down town today to buy a D70s but was told by two dealers that the D200 is expected around Dec 05/Jan 06. It's scheduled to be released around the time Canon's replacement for their 20D is to appear.
Now I'm in a dilemma, do I just take the plunge now and use the D70s for a few months before trying to sell it off at a great loss or do I just hang on for a few more months. What to do?!?
**SIGH** I guess I'm going to hold on ... sorry Nisa, eventhough I'm really itching in the worst way

to do the conversion, I can't quite bring myself to invest in a technology that is going to be improved upon in such a short time, especially since it's a hobby (most of the time) and not my ricebowl.
I think I'll comfort myself by getting another SB800 (you can never have too many of these) and some new umbrellas.
| quekky | Jul 24 2005, 08:53 AM |
i plan to convert my D70 once and for all, no more color dslr till i decided to get the D200 (or whatever replacement) when it's selling cheap
matt, y not convert now and wait for the replacement to come?

Give me a week or so to check out a few things, including the price and availability of a new D70s. Before I make the jump to a pure IR D70 with my current cam (will nickname it D70i when done), I'll need to get the D70s to replace it. |
I am thinking if i want to get a new D70s as well.... I don't know if i want to buy a D70s or a D70..... personally not interested in D200....
But my D70 only like 6 - 7 mths old

I am thinking if i want to get another new one rather than buying off another person, at least i can be sure of my own camera not being abused...

yeah!!! rename it, i might even engrave my name at the bottom of the camera just for the heck of it!

It's driving me nuts as well!!!!

D200? but what extra features does it have to make it so attractive?

If i am chasing for a better technologies, yeah i think i will wait for D200.
But if your end is a D200, then i think u should just wait lor... don't go buy D70s then later sell it off at a loss then spend more money to buy another new one lah
Hold on to it. don't worry about it.

I am definitely sending mine to them to convert.... but then... i spent A BIT too much lately....

so i might wait till next mth before making plans to send it to them.

BUT of course before doing that... I need to get another new camera...

u already have a SB800 or u buying another one?
I am thinking if i want to sell mine away, cause i don't really know how to use it well....

why don't convert it now and wait for replacement?

| tomcat | Jul 24 2005, 01:36 PM |
The cost of conversion seems to be very reasonable and affordable.
Think I'll send my D60 to them for conversion once they are ready to convert Canon DSLRs.

Heh! Believe me, my hands were shaking with indecision while I stood in the store for more than two hours weighing my choices
I will need to have a non-IR camera with me before I can take the plunge as I still do shoots from time-to-time. That's the reason that I cannot convert and wait. I still shoot in film but have been weaning myself off it over the past three years to the point that I only do it to keep in shape.
Cost isn't a factor for the purchase of the D70s and I'm not all together sure that the D200's technological improvements would be good either, look at the D2X, great camera but not at all good for IR/UV. In buying the next camera, I would wish for it to be able to do IR/UV shots too (with on lens filters) as I would still want to do the
IR+Color overlay shots that a pure IR D70 could not do.

AAAAAHHH! I'm going crazy!!!
| QUOTE |

Anything that I tell you would be from the rumors and speculations that have been circulating. Among others is that it would have a 10MP CMOS censor, a better metering and focusing processor and engine that will allow metering with manual non-cpu lenses and focus faster, better color depth, more solid build, optional v-grip, larger LCD, 5 fps, etc, etc.
The 10MP CMOS is in debate though. Some people say 12, others more, a few say 8MP. Most say that it can't be 8 because Sony doesn't produce an 8MP sensor, however, the two dealers who told me about the coming D200 both said that it will be 8. It could be that there's a new DX sized 8MP CCD that no ones been told about but its all speculation.
I would personally not wish for too high a MP count as that would require better lenses. On top of that, it would also mean that the sensor would need a stronger AA filter, resulting in much poorer IR/UV responses.

Actually I already have two + one SB600

But with CLS, you just can't seem to get enough
Ah! Well, I've given myself a week of cooling-off time and the shop has agreed to hold on to one set for me for the week, so I might still end up getting it and taking the plunge after all.

okie! after much thinking and sleepless nites

(yeah SURE!

| deadpixel | Jul 28 2005, 04:27 PM |
Heh! Heh! I could have been jealous but I've already committed myself and ordered a D70s that I'm picking up tomorrow or Sat
Once I have it, I'm going to try replacing the filter by myself

Might try doing it in my company's clean room, so wish me luck.
Looks like we're going to be among the first in SG with an IR D70

so much for waiting for new technologies
how much are u paying for the D70s? i wanted to buy that as well.....
but then i think and look and think and look.....
I think i rather save the money to buy sigma 10-20, nikkor 105 and my golf set....
When are u going to do the replacing?
GOOD LUCK!
yeah i think we might

If u have a piece of spare filter laying around, do u mind selling me so that i can mod mine as well? I'll do it at home, with lots of dust

if not then i gotta order a piece of ELP
let us all pray hard that all our mods works

I thought about it over the weekend but felt that there was a very big possibility that the D200 would be unsuitable for IR, just like the D2X. The more I thought about it, the more I felt that a D70s would meet my needs. I could then check out a D200 for IR suitability when it appears and if its good, then sell of the D70s or wait for the D200s
I'm getting the body only, so it's costing me ~SG$1,400. For $60 more, I can get a 1GB 80x Lexar card. One thing I'll definately be getting with the D70s is the corded remote.

I'll be using the Hoya R72, so I need to get it cut first.
Wouldn't mind having others watch, the moral support would be good.

Did you consider the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG? It's not as solidly built as the Nikkor, but I've found it to be optically as good, if not better. The best part is that your hands won't feel like they're breaking, after 2 hours of chasing bugs.

Yeah, the Sigma 105 is much lighter, by about half actually, and also less costly, also about by half.
Shooting food? It's like quekky said, a 50mm f/1.8 will do the trick, unless you're planning to take pictures of rice grains
But seriously, a macro lens isn't absolutely necessary for photographing food unless you're going to do some real close-ups of small fruits or fruit item. What may be more useful would be a perspective control (PC) lens, but these are more expensive than 2xD70s.

Just picked up my D70s so will start the process of converting my old D70.
There'll be test pics almost immediately after the conversion I guess, eventhough they may just be pop-shots.
The thickness of the R72 (2.45mm) is closest to the AA filter (2.5mm). The Cokin P007 is only 1.5mm thick and is less dense than the R72.
