Techniques for modding your camera for Infrared, D70, Olympus, Minolta.....

I'm curious about the filter that is mentioned in the Digital Wedding Forum. He mentioned that it's from Edmund Optics, and that it's plastic. Any idea which one it is? The only plastic IR pass filter I was able to find was the Optical Cast IR Longpass filter and this isn't suitable as a IR Pass replacement for the hot mirror. blur0000.gif

36_1_21.gif Ok, I've found the answer over at this webpage. This guy also gives come details on how to overcome the IR focus compansation issue:

Based on their pricing, I think it would still be cheaper to get the 4" X 5" ELP from Edmund Optics and than cut it ourselves. We could also get custom cut Hoya R72s from Edmond Optics but when I checked with them, they said that they would only be willing to do it if there was an order for at least 25 pieces.

Using R72s as replacement filters may have a slight advantage over the ELPs in that the images would be closer to the ones we are so familiar with. Also, I'm not absolutely sure about this but, the R72's higher density many help in a small way to correct the IR focus compansation.

I'm also wondering whether we could approach Nikon Singapore to do the replacement for us for a fee. This guy managed to get Nikon Canada to do it for him: http://www.ebb.ns.ca/general/tech/infra-red.htm

ELP would definitely be cheaper than R72.
It may be possible to cut R72 glass using glass cutters but accuracy would be a prob.
Another possibility would be to use Cokin P007. Advantages would be that it's density is between R72 and ELP and it's plastic, so easier to cut. But need to find out the thickness of the hot mirror.

Deadpixel, how much did Edmunds quote u for 25 pieces of custom cut R72s?

This could be an interesting "Project" dribble0.gif

The measurements for the hot mirror are: 29.59mm(W) x 25.27mm(H) x 2.5mm (thickness)

I'm not sure about the thickness of the R72's that we buy from outside, but Edmund Optics are advertising theirs as being 2.5mm thick, just the correct thickness for a replacement filter.

They haven't given me the quote yet but I expect it to be rather high icon_hun.gif If you check their site, their price for a 52mm R72 is quite a bit higher than the regular stores' pricing.
