How I did my IR
TeddyLoves
first of all i want to thank you all CS members especially those who helped me a lot with my first IR shots (remember when i posted on CS my test pics with hyper noises all over the place, lost and frustrating, asking all kinds of questions?)
After that when i understood my problems and got along, I figured out that IR is basically some kind of special effect, so i just get playing & trying whatever crazy thoughts that i came up with.

For this particular photo, honestly i dont remember what exactly i did. I just look at the layer pallete and try to recall as much as possible what i really did.

here's what the layer pallete looks like. it's all what's left after 1 or 2 hours playing around. i get rid of all the unused layers so that it looks less messy.

Basically this is the photo i get after RAW proccessing. It has a strong red tint in it because ACR's white balance control can't go lower than 2000. And when i started this i wasn't really want to get good result, so i didnt bother with the Calibration tab to get the color "right"

This is what i get after doing the general Auto Levels & Channel Swap. About the Auto Levels, I used Levels Adjustment Layer, click on Auto so that it will adjust every single channel. I then went over each of those channels to fine tune them.

I then put this first normal photo on top. I shot this in RAW, too. It looks quite dull, but it's ok because i intensionally did that to get the dark green grass. I then put a Gaussian Blur on it. I dont remember how much blur, but it was quite blur. (Maybe i set it at 20, but i'm not so sure.) OK, then i set its opacity to 70%. I'm not sure why I came up putting it in a Group with a Hue/Saturation layer on top of it, but here's the settings (look at the layer pallete)
"in normal" layer set blend mode to Normal and Opacity 70%
"saturation boost" set blend mode to Normal and Opacity 100%, Saturation Value +50
"normal color" group set blend mode to Color and Opacity 30%
(You could have gotten the same result by just setting the "in normal" layer's blend mode to Color and adjust opacity though)

OK. here's the fun part. Normally when shooting IR and set the camera to produce JPG, we do a Custom White Balance on green grass or blue sky, right? This photo is the result of a normal shoot (take the IR filter out), with the Custom White Balance set to the IR photo of the green grass. The color turns out very weird isn't it? But what i like is that it has a strong blue cast, which in general very hard to get if you shoot IR with a Canon (at least in my case). And what i want here is the blue sky in it. (later i was thinking to get that result by changing white balance & tint in ACR of a normal photo, but i couldnt get the same result. not sure why)

But anywayz, i put this photo on top, applied Gaussian Blur on it, set its blend mode to Overlay. The Overlay mode will boost the overall saturation of the image, so i set the opacity down to 30%. At this point, somehow, i deleted all the trees out of the image. I really dont know why i did that. Maybe it was too dark and i wanted to keep details on the trees. But normally i would use a layer mask, other than deleting. This must be one of the rare ocasions that i actually destroy pixels out of the image.
This is how it looks when set blend mode to normal and opacity 100%
(IMG:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/teddyloves/Infrared/tutor/b4irtut_mg_0199_2_1.jpg)

That's basically it. this is what i got at this point
(IMG:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/teddyloves/Infrared/tutor/b5irtut_mg_0199_2_1.jpg)

I guess i still found the green tint on the grass too strong, so i introduced a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer set to -40. And this also decreases the saturation of other parts of the image, so i put in another Hue/Saturaiton adjustment layer to rescue those parts. This time there's a mask comes with it so it only affects the parts that i want. some of my friends say they like the image with stronger green on the grass. but for my taste i like it to be lighter sleep.gif so here's the 'almost' final result. i save it and put it away, even though the color, contrastness and everything isn't great. it's because im not sure where it'll go yet. maybe it'll be printed, maybe i'll post it on the web. so, depending on where it'll go to, i'll add some more adjustments like changing/converting color profile/color space/color mode, sharpening, adding a contrast curves, cropping, resizing, framing blah blah ...

hope i explain clearly enough and give you some inspiration. if there's anything unclear, feel free to leave a question sleep.gif

Thanks for your time to put this together.

Don't know if I'm up to it, but will try to digest and hope to achieve results like yours.

Hi,

This photo was taken in lazy mode....

(IMG:http://www.irphotography.org/gallery/albums/userpics/10008/DSC_0611.jpg)

I was shooting something in another direction when this truck wizzed by........

I turned and shot (did not take the IR filter off to focus as the D70 will autofocus well throught the filter when there is enough light).

After the "Auto everything---channel swap----hue change in Photoshop" this is what I got.

Cheers smile.gif
