Hi scifreaker,

Of the Canon cameras, I believe the earlier (G3,4 etc) Are very good for IR.

I have not tried them myself; it comes from feedback I obtained earlier.

Generally all Canon cameras will take excellent IR photo's .... the only thing is that the exposure time needed is quite long.

Never the less, Canon cameras can produce some very nice results in IR. It is wind that becomes the problem due to the long exposure times required.

Please experiment with which ever Canon you have and post your results here.

Depending on the particular Canon camera you choose to use, you may have to aquire a lens adapter to suit.
This will then allow you to purchase an IR filter to match.

I personally suggest a HOYA type to suit the lens thread of your lens adapter.

Have fun.

Hi,

Welcome! Regarding Canon cameras, only those before 300D are good for IR. Exposure is not that long(between 1 to 10 secs, depending on weather). Personally tried on 300D with Edmund Long Pass Filter, Cokin P007 and Hoya R72. Have seen EOS 10D in action, the exposure is about the same as 300D. Can auto focus too!

As for Powershot A series, I've tried A80 & A95 with R72 filter, exposure is about 1 sec, but some time, camera hunts alot.

Shall not comment on G3 as I didn't have. For 20D, its not so good for IR actually, exposure is extremely long, easily 30secs! And also, only works with R72. With Cokin P007 and Edmund Long Pass Filter, you will not be able to Custom White balance, all you get is a red image. I won't recommend 20D.

Ok, for 350D, I believe will be like 20D, as Canon's hot mirror seems to be getting stronger and stronger! So exposure should be very long.

Long exposure caused motion blurs, some time can be appealing but not most of the time.

Hope this help wink.gif

Cheers

Another thing to ask the pros, what is the differences or similarities of cokin P007 & Hoya R72 filter?

Cokin P007 is a plastic filter. On D70, it will produce a vibrant blue(Like 100% cyan) sky and yellowish foliage for the trees.

Hoya R72 produce a mild or pastel blue sky with whitish foliage for trees. The contrast of the sky and clouds are also better for R72.

There's also Edward Long Pass filter, but need to stack up 2 pcs to get IR effect. The colours produced with it is pretty much like Cokin P007's.

There's also LEE 87 gelatin filter which produce nice contrasty black and white ir image. Personal favourite wink.gif

Look through the gallery, very soon, you'll be able to tell the difference.

There's also Tiffen #87.
Effects are similar to Lee Gelatin filter, but it's mounted glass.
