Sigma 28-300mm
vortex
Guys..

just wondering how's the performance of this lens?
i know this type of compact all rounder lens isnt that good..but if can get decent pics at 300mm i dont mind biggrin.gif

someone selling quite cheap 2nd hand
http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthread.php?t=148552

Andy,

PHOTO AND SPECS of the lens.

Very compact wide to zoom lens. But then at 300mm f/6.3 I would give it a second thought. Macro mode is at 300mm only.
vortex
i thought this is a older lens? not the DX only version. blur0000.gif

macro only at 300mm and not the other ranges??? doh00000.gif
teerex
Sigma website shows this as the only 28 -300 zoom lens. The one that guy selling may be an older version, don't know.

According to specs. the macro mode for this lens is only at 300mm. So you need a greater working distance to shoot macro.

The 70-300 APO II that I told you earlier, macro works between 200-300mm range.

Hi teerex,

personally I wouldn´t try sigma lens because I believe that zooms lens are generally not suiteable for IR photography.
In the last weeks I bought a lot of old-new Ai and Ais nikkor lens to get something wider then my 28mm lens
which is only a 42mm on my D1.

Yesterday I got them and I did some intense lens testing in my home. Same you, I am also
searching for a tele lens for IR which should give great results in sharpness and should never
have problems with hotspots.

I don´t want to talk to much about my results because they are much work and costs me a lot of money.
But one thing I can tell.... I would never buy sigma or other brands because the suitable nikkor lenses from
the past are really cheap copmared to the new generation of DX nikkors. The only problem is to find out which
series of the lens you are interested in works well with your camera and the ccd in combination with the filter
you are using..... the first, second, third, fourth, fifth or sometimes the sixt generation of nikkor lens....????

Cheers,

Wolfgang

Thanks Wolfgang,

Actually Vortex is the one who's asking about the Sigma 28-300.

I already have a Sigma 70-300 APO which I use for normal color photography when I require a longer range. I don't use that for IR.

My favourite lens for IR is the Kit Lens that came with the D70, 18-70 DX. Gives me satisfactory results for IR, good DOF even at wide open.

Before this I used to use a old Nikkor f/3.3 35-70mm AF (non DX) for IR. I find that IR results with this lens rather soft and lack sharpness.

As photography is just a hobby I do not splurge too much money on accessories.
I make do with what I have.

Cheers

28-300 not wide enough on a digital and I also don't trust Sigma. Most superzoom are so so in performance but if you want to carry light and have a all rounder lens than I recommend the Tamron 18-200 i.e. 28-300 for digital. Decent performance.

Hi teerex,

you are right... I was little bit confused by this two names.... vor-tex... tee-rex whistlin.gif

I understand, you don´t want to spend so much money for the lens.
But did you know that the best lens for IR are actually very cheap one´s from nikon?

Because I make a lot of lens reviews this time I have some of the lens more then once.
So if someone wants to get an affordable perfect IR performer..... he can talk with me and I can take
the lens with me when I visit Singapore in 3 weeks from now on.

Cheers,

Wolfgang

Wolfgang,

Perhaps you can let us know which are the Nikkor AF lenses you have reviewed that are good for IR.

Should be one wide enough for landscapes and not too expensive.

Thanks.
NikkorAT
teerex,

same I said befor, no AF lenses can be used for wide landscapes in IR without the risks of hotspots.

I can recommend you some of the old Ai lens from the mid 70´s.
The best performer is an old 28mm nikkor.
I have two from them, so if you are interested.... cool.gif

There is also a good 20mm (don´t ask which one naughty0.gif ) and one of the 50mm is also a good performer.
And there is one 200mm tele lens which produces extremly sharp images. None of them is expensive.
All around 50 to 200 USD per piece, you only have to know which one to buy.... naughty0.gif

But if you want to know more..... please don´t try to press all this information out of me in the first days.
Lets drink some beers and talk about, okay?

Cheers,

Wolfgang

Wolfgang,

Of all those you listed, my interest would be the 28mm or the 20mm which in my opinion is suitable for landscape. With the crop factor in they would be 42mm and 30mm respectively am I right? By the way what's the largest aperture on those 2 lenses?

Sorry, I don't drink but of course we can always meet up when you arrive and talk while you have your beer and me my Coke haha0000.gif

Well Vortex, I do have some lens that you may be interested including the Tamron 18-200.
A good value for money lens that I can recommend is the Nikon 70-300 ED or the Sigma 70-300.
70-210 does not seems to match the above.
