IR Abstract taken with a Lensbaby
deadpixel
For those who've played around a Lensbaby, either the original or 2.0, you'd know that it's almost impossible to shoot IR with it. icon_ran.gif This is because unlike normal lenses, lensbabies are not brought into focus by the turning of rings but are instead focused by squeezing the lens with your fingers. This action would most times require both your hands, so it would be impossible to pre-focus and then mount the IR filter, even if your camera was mounted on a tripod. This situation has now changed with the arrival of the D70i... haha0000.gif

#1 - "North of Twelve"

#2 - "Indentations"

#3 - "Stacked Pipes"

(IMG:http://www.pbase.com/image/47822166/large.jpg)

All photos were taken with the D70i + Lensbaby 2.0 + macro filter. Other manual settings are as follows:

Aperture: f/8
Shutter: 1/500
Flash: SB800 @ 1/128 with softbox

These are indoor still-life shots, will do outdoor structure/people/creature shots soon.

By the way, in case you're thinking that the lensbaby isn't very sharp, I'll tell you that it is. These are soft partially due to the IR and the need for focal compensation. On a normal camera, the Lensbaby 2.0 is tack-sharp in its sweet-spot.

Comments/criticisms/suggestions etc, etc welcomed. sweating.gif

Thanks for looking.

Cheers,
Matt

Chopsticks

Oooooohhh! Nope! Nope! ppth0000.gif

Something smaller and used so often that we tend to ignore its existence but get really angry icon_ran.gif when we run out of it and can't find any.

Whoooo! Getting closer but still no cigar haha0000.gif

Think smaller ... but not needles! blur0000.gif

I did this in part to demonstrate the "sharpness" of the lensbaby and also to show-off its macro capabilities when coupled with a macro filter. cool.gif

i think u might be right? haha0000.gif

Awwww! You managed to guess it. ppth0000.gif

It is mechanical pencil refills, stacked onto a red piece of silicon sponge. This gives the contrast between the black refills and the background as the red sponge becomes lighter as a result of more red coming into the sensor.

How 'bout a 4" x 6" photo of the D70i taken with a D70s haha0000.gif

Hmm...hee! it does look a little like Pocky sticks, but if I took photos of those with the macro attachment, they'd look like baseball bats. 36_11_6.gif

Ya, PS. Does it have the effect of the Lensbaby?

I know that you've said that no matter what, nothing beats the original. But just wanted to try to emulate. haha0000.gif

Not quite unsure.gif

The thing about the lensbaby effect is that the bluring is not and is never uniform. It is a mix off a zooming blur, a panning blur and and a creamy OOF bokeh. Very difficult or near impossible to duplicate effectively on PS icon_hun.gif

In your attempt, the transition from the blur to the clear goddess is a little too abrupt.

Good attempt though. wink.gif

Matt,

Thanks for your description of the characteristics of the results of the Lensbaby. Read your descriptions and re-looked at your pictures and compared to mine. Realised the world of difference. haha0000.gif

Yes, quekky agree. Nothing near the Lensbaby.
